Come carve a Japanese rice paddle (aka Shamoji) in this two day carving class at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, FL. This hands-on workshop centers on shaping wood into a useful and beautifully simple kitchen utensil. Participants will work with both straight and curved carving blades while learning how form, surface, and grain influence the finished piece. The workshop explores paddle design, wood selection, finishing oils, and carving techniques, allowing participants to experience the tactile rhythm of handwork while creating their own hand-carved rice paddle.

Wood and carving tools will be provided.

Chirirenge in Japanese is the name of the soup spoons from Asia and is used as ramen spoons in Japan. Unlike the western spoon, it has a flat bottom and is deep to hold more soup. The handle is curved upwards and the shape mimics a fallen petal of the lotus flower called renge in Japanese. The word chiri means “to fall off.”

 The Joy of Carving workshop is a craft experience designed to help participants slow down for the sake of spoon carving and learn about this culturally unique utensil. Participants focus on the tactile exploration of wood as a creative medium, learning carving techniques to shape one’s work into functional art. This workshop covers everything from wood selection, the ramen spoon design, finishing oils, along with a knife, blade, and carving techniques so participants can experience the joy of creating their own hand-carved kitchen tool.

Wood and carving tools will be provided.

Hashi, the Japanese word for chopsticks, are an essential part of dining across Asia, designed for precision and balance. Unlike Western utensils, chopsticks encourage a more mindful eating experience, requiring dexterity and a connection to the food. Their form is simple yet elegant, with variations in shape and material reflecting regional traditions and culinary uses.

This hands-on workshop offers an introduction to carving through the making of a personal set of chopsticks. Participants will work with wood and straight carving blades while learning traditional proportions, shaping techniques, and finishing methods. Through careful handwork and repetition, the workshop invites participants to slow down and experience the quiet satisfaction of transforming raw wood into a functional and personal kitchen tool.

Wood and carving tools will be provided.
